I used to scratch my head when I watched my athletes do a lunge, wondering why they couldn’t keep their chest up on the way up from the bottom of the lunge. I began to play with different options with loads and hand positions and it quickly became obvious to me that it was due to a trunk stability issue. That is where the Overhead Lunge Progression was born.
This is one of my favorite exercise progressions. Not only is it incredibly functional, but it actually solves a lot of the issues that you typically see with athletes doing lunges. If you follow the progression, you can ensure that your athletes will be able to perform a quality, complex lunging pattern very efficiently.
